Background
John is a Chartered Engineer who worked in both the public and private sectors – the latter at Director level – prior to establishing his own design practice in 1991, 12 years after graduation.
He was at the forefront of the sustainability movement in this country long before business in general caught on to the need to develop practices and policies that protected natural resources, the environment and their people, reduced costs and increased profits.
During the 15 years he spent running John Packer Associates he was able to put into practice many of the ideas he had developed working as a divisional director with international engineering design consultants Sir Frederick Snow & Partners. It was during his four years with the Electricity Council, the research arm of the electricity supply industry, that he gained his passion for sustainable design and procurement, helping to develop systems to reduce energy consumption in buildings which, in 1985, were responsible for around 50% of the country's energy usage.
He now applies the same principles of sustainability to areas of corporate affairs far beyond just the buildings that businesses occupy – their attitude to 'green' issues; their approach to finance; their relationships with employees, clients and suppliers; and the wider area of corporate social responsibility. A business that is valued by the people it works with is much more likely to be successful.
John brings an enthusiastic and pragmatic approach to business management, with an outstanding knowledge of what works, and what doesn't, across a wide range of sectors.
