Laura McKenzie MSc MA FCA

Laura is a senior financial professional with 20 years experience as a CFO, venture capitalist, corporate financier and strategy consultant. She has a particular interest in high growth early stage technology and founder led, businesses. She has recently returned to live in Sussex after 15 years living and working overseas.

Laura holds an MA Hons from the University of Cambridge where she studied Natural Sciences and Management Studies and an MSc in Development Finance from SOAS, University of London. She started her career in the valuation and strategy team at PwC, where she spent 9 years in London and Melbourne. Laura is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.  
 
Laura then spent 3 years as an impact investor leading a portfolio of investments in micro-finance organisations in India, the Philippines and East Africa, having previously volunteered as a CFO in rural Uganda.
 
She is an experienced technology investor having spent 8 years as a venture capitalist in Australia. Initially she was at the largest venture capital firm in Australia, Starfish Ventures who managed $400m, where she sat on 5 boards.  Laura is passionate about empowering women, and co-founded an early stage investment business focused on training women to be investors, and backing female founders. She held Scale’s Financial Services License and led investments across ecommerce, marketplaces, AI/ML, SaaS, fin-tech, drug discovery and energy efficiency. She was often parachuted in as interim CFO to portfolio companies to address day to day operational issue and facilitate fundraising, access government grants and secure exits.
 
Laura returned “home" to Sussex in 2019. She is a qualified yoga teacher and whilst she has retired from netball and endurance events, is a regular runner.
